The top surface of the Plymouth Pottery coasters is very hard. The sealed, glazed layer has been heat treated to protect the Hungry Cats printed art work. The pulped wood centre of each drinks coaster is 0.5cm thick which gives them a really solid and sturdy feel. Their mission is to prevent the marks or rings often left by wine glasses and coffee cups from damaging the surface of your precious furniture.

It is this 5mm thickness that prevents heat generated by your mug or tea cup from getting through to the surface of your table. This is a particular problem with varnished wooden surfaces because the heat from the mug or cup can end up leaving an annoying white sheen on the wood. The corkbacked underside of each coaster has a thin layer of soft cork which prevents any scratches or marks.
