The glazed upper surface is a hard layer that has been heat treated to protect the Summer Gold art print. The solid and sturdy feel comes from the 0.5cm thick, pulped wood centre used in each drinks coaster. As well as looking attractive, the aim of the coasters is to prevent circles or marks from forming where wine glasses and coffee mugs are carelessly placed on the surface of your valuable furniture.

The 5mm thickness of the hardboard is what prevents the heat from your mug getting through to the varnished surface of your desk or table. This is a particular issue with lacquered wooden surfaces when this heat ends up leaving a persistent white blemish on the wood. Added to prevent any scratches or scuffs is the soft corkbacked base of each coaster.
